Pimples (Acne) are the visible end results of hormonal, bacterial and inflammatory disturbances.
The inflammation produces pimples or deeper lumps such as cysts or nodules. It involves the face, back and chest, and is characterised by the presence of black heads with papules and pustules, as well as cysts and scars in more severe cases.
What are the causes of pimples?
Pimples (Acne) are caused by excessive production of oil by the oil forming glands, stimulated by androgens. This excess sebum, mixing with dust and dirt, blocks the skin pores and causes blackheads to form. Some bacteria, normally present in hair roots, begin to increase in number abnormally and cause inflammation.
Will makeup make your acne worse?
While it is true that the creams, oils and greases used in cosmetics can aggravate acne by irritating or blocking pores, if you are concerned and don't want to take a chance, look for products labelled "non-acnegenic" or "non-comedogenic"
What are the types of pimples (Acne)?
There are four main types (Grades) of pimples
- Grade1: Black and White heads
- Grade2: Black and White heads with redness around them.
- Grade4: Large nodules and cysts.
What are the factors which can aggravate pimples?
- Bacteria, Dust and dirt
- Before periods (in females)
- Certain food habits (e.g. excess fat, chocolate, pizza etc.)
- Stress (in some people)
- Oily makeup
- Scrubbing and vigorous washing make acne worse
What is the treatment of pimples?
Mild cases respond to topical therapy with benzyl peroxide, while more refractory conditions require treatment with long-term antibiotics or isotretinoin. Alternatively, severe persistent acne may be treated by topical application of retinoids, which are synthetic vitamin A.
What are prevention and control methods for pimples?
- Wash your face and hands twice a day with mild soap, sulphur soap, or antibacterial soap.
- Do not use your unwashed fingers to squeeze, pop, or pick at acne lesions. Bacteria and dirt from under your fingernails can spread the inflammations and worsen the acne.
- Use only "non-comedogenic" cosmetics and skin care products which do not clog skin pores.
- Wash your hair regularly. If you have oily hair, wash it daily and keep it away from your face.
- Avoid acne irritants such as airborne grease from cooking activities.
- If your acne condition worsens after eating certain foods, avoid eating those foods.
- Protect your skin from ultraviolet rays by wearing a hat and using sunscreen as needed.
- Always consult with your doctor (skin specialist) before starting any treatment for pimples.
